A Breast Cancer Scare

Jody knew something was wrong. The doctor scheduled a needle biopsy and asked her to pick up her mammogram report to take to the surgeon the next day. Jody opened the envelope from the radiologist, read, “highly suggestive of malignancy,” and fear shot through her. She prayed as she drove, and had the thought “Now everything has changed,” but the answering reply was, “Nothing has changed.” Her calm returned. Nine months later, treatment completed, her radiologist told her he would see her in 6 months. Jody tells us, “Throughout my treatment, I followed God’s word to me: ‘don’t fight the medicine. Take it in Jesus’ name.’ This word was instrumental in my fight against the cancer. We liter- ally prayed over each pill, each chemotherapy mixture, and the radiation. I took in His name. He has healed me. If I were able to go back...and avoid having cancer strike me, I would say, ‘No, thanks. I would not change a thing.’ For you see, God was with me in a very real way. His presence went before me when I was afraid; His peace, which is totally different from the world’s peace, was lavished upon me. He sustained me, He prevented harmful side effects, He allowed me to complete my year as a kindergarten teacher (when at first it seemed impossible to do). This year has been a faith builder for me, and I feel as though I will never be the same.”Jody’s guiding scripture was Isaiah 43:1-3, “...do not fear for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire you will not be scorched, nor will the flames burn you. For I am the Lord your God.”
